How It Plays: Our Hands-On Notes

To reclaim London for the people, you will need an army. That's the core loop, and it's where Syndicate separates itself from earlier entries. As a gang leader, you strengthen your stronghold and rally rival gang members to your cause in order to take back the capital from the Templars' hold. In Assassin's Creed Syndicate, action is fast-paced and brutal. As a master of combat, you combine powerful multi-kills and countermoves to strike your enemies down and win a ticket in Valhalla.

Choose your own way to fight enemies. Take advantage of the Rope Launcher technology to be as stealthy as ever and strike with your Hidden Blade. Or choose the kukri knife and the brass knuckles to get the drop on your enemies. In my experience, the stealth route rewards patience during the factory infiltration missions, while the brawler build shines in the street-level gang fights where three or four enemies rush you at once.

The pacing in the first few hours is deliberate. You'll spend time clearing boroughs, which unlocks gang upgrades and fast-travel points. If you've played Assassin's Creed Unity, you'll recognize the borough control idea, though Syndicate trims the co-op baggage and focuses on solo play — the game is listed as singleplayer only. For a different flavor of the same era-spanning formula, the older Assassin's Creed Brotherhood remains a great companion download, and if you want the more recent Norse chapter, Assassin's Creed Valhalla is worth a look after you finish London.

Installation Guide
